Lab: Junos and IOS in one OSPF area
The protocol is a standard; the two command lines are not. Same adjacency, two ways of asking about it.
OSPF is a standard, so a Cisco router and a Juniper router form an adjacency without either knowing what the other is. What differs is everything around it: how you configure it, how you check it, and how you commit it.
Do this
- Bring OSPF up on both, in area 0.
- Confirm the adjacency from both sides.
- Advertise a network from each and see it on the other.
R1(config)# router ospf 1
R1(config-router)# network 10.0.0.0 0.0.0.3 area 0
user@J1# set protocols ospf area 0 interface ge-0/0/0
user@J1# commit
The point
Two habits worth carrying across:
- Junos has a candidate configuration. Nothing you type takes effect until
- The checks are the same ideas with different words.
Try breaking it
- Set different hello timers on the two sides and watch the adjacency fail to
- Mismatch the area and compare the two error messages.
- Make a change on the Junos side and walk away without committing, then try
